As a teenager I was put in charge of a large service project. The assignment was to go the State Fair Grounds and help get a building ready to be put back into use. The building’s original purpose was that of a small arena with bleachers for ranching competitions like calf roping or what not. The arena seated close to 500 people. We had to strip the benches to get ready for painting and also clean out some old offices on the upper floors that had recently been used as a pigeon coop. It was a good amount of work and definitely more than my friends and I could handle. What was I to do? Point blank–I needed more help than I could put together. I talked to my dad about my problem and he helped me out by giving me a list of a bunch of youth leaders that were always looking for service projects to have the youth help out on. I got a friend of mine to help me make some phone calls and to make a long story short we were able to get the people we needed to complete the project. It felt good to be able to help out and to have organized such a large project. Looking back at the experience now I realized that I could not have done the job without the support and contacts of my father. SEO marketing is somewhat the same with the use of back links. Back links is a way to leverage the traffic of another site to help with your own site by making your site rank better with search engines and thus getting more traffic.
When I first started learning about SEO I was clueless about back linking. I had no idea what it was or how to do it. There are many methods and strategies for creating backlinks, some effective and some not quite as good for your site. Backlinking is like many things, the more effort you put in, the more you get out and sometimes it not what you know, but who you know. Creating relationships with other website owners in your market space is one way to get links that can be credible links, however you have to find out who are the right people to get to know. In looking to set up back links for a new blog I am working with I started by looking at what website carried good influence in my space. I like to use sites like AllTop.com to search for what sites I could look at to start a dialog with to set up some backlinks. When I do searches like this I create website categories that will be useful to my search and then go to town organizing them as I go along. By using AllTop.com you can be pretty certain that the site are top sites in the niche and have some influence.
Once you get a good list going you can use other tools like SEMRush.com’s backlink tool. This tool will show you what backlinks the websites you found so far in your search are using. This will help grow your list of potential URL’s and also ones that are more open to backlinking. I also found by doing this I found websites that I was not thinking of to backlink with, so it was great to use to open up my list to a more diverse group. Another good piece of information I found using SEMRush.com was how many backlinks the more popular websites are using as well as what types of websites make good, reputable backlinks.
For the list of backlinks that I made with the intent on approaching for backlinks I wanted to look at a few things to make sure they were worth my effort. First off, I wanted to make sure the webpages were still up and running. No sense trying to backlink to a web page that is no longer there. I also wanted to look at the page rank of both the website as well as the page in question. Also I wanted to make sure the website was relevant to my own and thus has better odds of having like-minded visitors that have might also be interested in my site. I looked for sites that I felt I could possible have success with for backlinking. Large sites like Google, Facebook or Amazon don’t need to work with me and are going to be hard or next to impossible to set things up with. I focused on reputable sites that I thought I might have a chance with based on the site itself or from my backlink search using SEMRush.com. I did find some larger sites like CNN or The EPA’s website that others in my niche had backlinks with that I thought I might as well try as they could pay off big, however I did not add too many like that to my list. Using these factors and my search I came up with the following list with their page rank as a staring point:
