I am not one that pays much attention to banner ads; I just kind of tune them out for the most part. When asked the question “What is your favorite banner ad?” I drew blank. I can’t think of the last time I clicked on one to be honest. So I went looking for some examples of banner ads that I thought were good. I found two that I liked.
The first one was done by Apple and appeared on the New York Times website. It is based of the “I’m a Mac” ad campaign.
The second one was the “Play Like Schroeder” done by Met Life. Again on the New York Times website.
The “Get a Mac” banner ad appeared on the New York Times web page in 2009. During this time Apple was using the “I’m a Mac” Ad campaign on TV. The ads were clever and funny and the banner ad held true to the brand story. I loved how the banner ad made it look like the ad was messing with the actual website. Mac’s are higher end computers and I think the ad worked well with the New York Times readership. The ad started by itself so it was very noticeable. Being easily recognizable and the fact that the TV ad’s were all ready plastered all over the web, the banner ad got attention but in a funny lighthearted way making it a better than average banner ad.
The “Play with Schroeder” Banner ad also appeared on the New York Times website. Again, I think this is a great fit for a company like Met Life due to the readership of the New York Times and the other type of ads that are seen on that website. The Peanuts character is iconic with the general demographics of the Times so it was an attention grabber. The banner was very well made and was of high quality. The banner was animated so a great attention grabber. Also the banner was interactive, thus helping the banner get more clicks. I thought the banner was well executed on a good website for the company, and was something that was worth wasting a little time one.
