For my final project nn my Fundamental of Web Design class I did a presentation on the growth and benefits of having a mobile or tablet based website. Keeping in mind the design with the type of device the end user will be using i is the goal here. More and more people are using a mobile device to access the web and designers need to stay in front of that fact if they want to stay relevant. So if you have a web site the question to ask yourself is: are you mobile ready
Seven years ago I married who I thought was the most amazing woman. I was wrong. The woman she is today is so much greater. She is smart and talented and has so much potential. I feel she has more potential than me, but I am the one that gets promotions at work. I am the one to get raises. She is the one that gets over looked. I loved in Sheryl Sandberg’s talk on Ted talks where she talks about “Setting at the Table”. I wish my wife would, but more, I think as a man I need to make sure that she and any other women in the room knows it’s is ok for them to be seated at the table.
Does gender play a role in leadership? I would like to think so. I would like to think that I got the promotion because I earned it, but sadly that is not the case in the world we live in today. I am not sure that most people understand that it even happens. It is something that has been that way for so long that most people just think that is the way it is so just let it be. To me that is not a good reason.
Men in general carry more power. Is it that men just go out and take it? To some degree I think yes, however men carry more power simple because that’s they way a lot of people think. I work with a guy that thinks that if he talks down to women then they will do what he wants them to do. To me that is not acceptable for many reasons but one of the big reasons is that we should all treat each other with respect.
I do agree with the information that we have been presented with, however I do not understand why we as a society do not act the way we feel. I think there should be more women in leadership roles. I know that my wife is more compassionate that I am. I think that is a needed trait in a leader. Just look at the old saying, “Behind every great man is a greater women” Do I think women have an edge with the concept of “Leadership is an Affair of the Heart”? Yes, I do based on the fact that women are more compassionate. That being said I think the ideal way to do things is with equality, if the best traits of each gender where brought together the world would be a batter place. So I say let the best persons win.
The Big Web Show hosted by Dan Benjamin and Jeffery Zeldman is a podcast series about web technology and marketing with different industry experts each time. Episode 61 was with web designer, Khoi Vinh. He, along with his partners, have recently released an app called Mixel , a creative little art app that lets you create clash type art and then share it with others via channels like social media. Not only can they see it and then can change it –it then can become a collaborative peace.
Khoi has also been a long time blogger with his blog subtraction.com. He said in the podcast that to him he feels that a designer also needs to be able to effectively communicate in written words. That if a designer could not put pen to paper and write out their ideas in a clear and understandable way, then they did not have clear vision. His many years with his blog is proof that he lives by that ideal.
Having also having worked in the news arena, Khoi wanted to be able to take that familiar newspaper feel and bring that to the web, which he did with his design for The Onion web site. The Onion is a funny little news outlet that is all comedy but done in a series news forum. He used a web design style he called grid layout or a grid system. It was not one I was familiar with so I looked it up online and found a great article about it at www.smashingmagazine.com that explained the way it works.
Another thing of note that was discussed in this episode was that of niche or specialized focus in the types of clients to work with. They boiled it down to “Are you in this to make a lot of money” or “Are you in it to make a difference” Of course I am going into Internet Marketing to make money, however it was very impactful to hear industry leaders talking about making a difference and doing the best you can for clients. It is nice to know that there are professionals out there that are acting with integrity and I am excited to join their ranks.
It has finally come, my first real “techy” class–Fundamentals of Web Design. In this class I am getting an introduction into the world of HTML. I had seen HTML documents before and been baffled by them since I am not a programing type of guy–I make it look pretty not make the code work. I was scared to try, but I pushed on and took a stab at it. Well I had no choice it was an assignment. But it sounds so much better saying I did it of my own accord. Anyway–I read some information and watched some videos and then put code to document. It was not that hard once I got past telling myself it was too complicated for me. I took it one line of code at a time and it started to make sense. The finished product is not the best website I have ever seen. It is simple and basic, like one of those first websites I had seen that was just text on a white background. But simple it may be, I wrote the code. I would guess that the first HTML document was simple too. It all comes just one step at a time. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks.
I ran across this video this morning and I thought I would share it. It is on a website by Liberty Mutual called the “The Responsibility Project” . I thought it was great.

2012 is going to be the year of the relationships for me. I want to focus on making the relationships I have more meaningful and beneficial to me and to them—like my wife and kids. I also want to cultivate new relationships with people who will add more value to my life. I believe that it is through relationships that I will find success in life.
And since it is a new year–what blog would be complete without some other resolutions?
I have always been a firm believer in the power of goals and have set goals most of my life, however New Year’s Resolutions always seem to fall by way side after just a few days. I guess the difference with goals and New Years Resolution’s is that every one does New Years Resolution’s–even if they have no plan of keeping them. They are more like a wish list, not something people really commit to.
However I am taking New Year’s Resolutions serious this year. My Goals for 2012 are:
– Lose weight. My goals are to lose 77 lbs.
– Get an “A” average in School
– Illustrate my Father-in-law’s Christmas book
– Spend more quality time with my wife. (Go out 3 times a month bare minimum…even if it’s just the 2 of us running to the grocery store)
– Get an iPad
Now you all get to see how well I do….
